Personality:

Having had a sheltered upbringing, Anne is a quiet, thoughtful young woman, who is blissfully naive to the wider world around her. Her parents instilled a peaceful and caring disposition onto Anne, and it seems impossible that she should ever have a bad word to say about anybody. Having received no formal education, Anne is reserved and unassuming in her disposition, and has spent much of her life being obedient and following other’s instructions, as evidenced by her dutiful attention to domestic duties such as needlework. She is careful and considerate with her opinions, and respects those around her.

However, Anne has little knowledge of culture outside her own, and can often be surprised or even frightened by what new things she sees. She is extremely naive, knowing very little about life and customs outside of her family. She’s overwhelmed by the King’s first meeting, in which he kisses her without invitation, but despite his hesitations, she praises the King. She once tells the Countess of Rutland that: “When he comes to bed he kisseth me, and he taketh me by the hand, and biddeth me 'Good night, sweetheart'; and in the morning kisseth me and biddeth 'Farewell, darling” - believing that that is all is expected of her. Sheltered as she is, she doesn’t understand how to have sex, or how to make the King happy in that regard. It requires careful explanation for Anne to understand what is expected of her, but even then, but marriage remains unconsummated. She struggles with the idea of being intimate with the King, knowing how uninspired he feels around her, and the fact that he has some unpleasant issues of his own - the gout on his leg smells awfully.

Though Anne is uneducated, she is not without intelligence, for she's clever enough never to antagonise the King directly, and is always courteous and polite to her husband. Despite her grounds for complaint, Anne knows a worse fate could await her, and she serves to be meek and unassuming to save her own neck, as well as her sincere respect for his Majesty.

She tries her hardest to make herself more appealing to him. Despite her unassuming nature, she is determined, working hard to learn her Majesty’s language, so that she might share conversation with him and make him happy. While Anne is often silent and in her thoughts, which many might consider introverted - she enjoys company of others, and tries in earnest to be liked by those around her, including the King’s children. She has also taken up card games, something that she enjoys immensely. Anne finds great entertainment in the smallest of things - something that describes her perfectly, for she is a ‘glass half full’ kind of woman - optimistic and strong in light of all the difficulties she's faced with. Living in a strange country with no companionship is overwhelming for Anne, but she isn’t defeated, and manages to maintain respect and compassion for all those around her. It’s only the King who takes a severe dislike to Anne, who otherwise is respected and beloved by all others.

History itself praises her highly, Holinshed considered her to be a “lady of right commendable regard, courteous, gentle, a good housekeeper and very bountiful to her servants” and throughout England, she was regarded as one of the "most sweet, gracious, and humane queens they have had."

[Anne has seen very little of the King since their wedding day. He lay with her at night, he joined her for food and the occasional card games, but otherwise, Anne knew he preferred to distance himself from her. She finds it difficult, alone in this strange new country, with so very few people to confide in and a King she fears doesn’t love her. But in spite of all that, Anne has a smile on her face when she is presented with a gift by one of the King’s men.

Despite him spending little time with her, Anne finds he is very respectful towards her, and he earns that from her in kind.]

Thank you, Mr Culpepper. [Her English is improving, enough so that she can speak respectfully to the King’s servants.] Please, will you tell the King that I am humbled and grateful for his kind gift, and I would be most pleased to join him for dinner.

[Her head bows gently to dismiss the boy. No matter how her heart breaks inside, this is to be her life here, and she knows she must be grateful for all that she does receive. After all, she does not want to find her fate going a similar way to her namesake.]
